Join So Mayer and Jake Hall for an evening of conversation about So’s new book Bad Language, a memoir and manifesto on language and power. How do we forge solidarity when language is used against us? What kinds of queer resistance and rage might help us find new words and ways of speaking and listening?

In Bad LanguageSo blends memoir and manifesto to explore the politics of speech, looking at how language has been used and abused in their own life, and investigating the relationship between language and sexual violence. Turning over the semantic tricks and traps of their multi-lingual childhood, the book asks who gets to speak, and who is forced into silence. Through examining texts from fairy tales to protest cards, Bad Language also sets out a path for us to collectively reclaim language for pleasure and protest.

So will be in conversation with Jake Hall and will be talking about their newest release Bad Language, which will be available to purchase at the event.

So Mayer is a writer, bookseller and organiser. Their most recent book is Bad Language (Peninsula Press) and most recent collaborative project is The Word for World: The Maps of Ursula K Le Guin, co-edited with Sarah Shin (Spiral House/Architectural Editions). So works with Burley Fisher Books and the Maktaba at Ibraaz, and is a member of queer feminist film curation collective Club Des Femmes.

Jake Hall is a Sheffield-based journalist, a public speaker, and the author of two books, The Art of Drag (2020) and Shoulder to Shoulder (2024), shortlisted for the 2025 Bread & Roses Prize. They’ve written extensively about queer histories, environmental justice, arts and culture for publications such as The Independent, Atmos and Xtra Magazine, always in the hopes of creating accessible, engaging work.
